July 18 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Taught by Andrew Lee
Teacher & Artist of Primitive Skills
Please Bring Your Lunch
Refrigerator & Microwave Available
(All Supplies Included)
Artist and instructor Andrew Lee combines his love of history and nature in this hands-on workshop. May through July is the ideal time to harvest bark, as sap is actively moving nutrients from the roots to the upper portions of trees such as poplar, sweet gum, and cedar. This workshop includes six hours of instruction divided between morning and afternoon sessions.
Students will begin by working with actual poplar logs and learning how to remove bark, fold it, and prepare it for drying. Each participant will take home their folded bark and supplies to complete a second basket on their own.
Next, students will be provided with a pre-removed, folded, and dried piece of poplar bark. Using this prepared form, they will construct a basket by attaching handles, rim supports, and other structural elements, with opportunities to add decorative embellishments. Each student will leave with one completed basket and the materials needed to finish a second basket at home.
Class size is typically limited to eight participants. Due to the use of sharp tools, this workshop is restricted to ages 18 and older. No prior basket-making experience is required.
Come enjoy a day of learning a traditional skill, from harvesting bark to creating your own handcrafted basket.
